torch for Gonzo

Grieve not, nor speak of me with tears
but laugh and talk of me as if I were beside you..
I loved you so---
'twas Heaven here with you.

~Isla Paschal Richardson~

Our beloved Gonzo died on Christmas Eve 2000, after giving us 17 years of love and loyalty. He was his mum's "little shadow" - staying close by her wherever she went.

He was the gentlest of dogs, never aggressive or demanding. Gonzo loved his "walkies" bringing the house down with his cries as soon as he caught sight of a lead.

When his "mate" Gizmo died in 1998, he literally lost his voice with crying. Nothing the vet could prescribe seemed to overcome his grief. The arrival of Jendi was the one thing that gave him back his joy! - but not immediately! Gonzo refused to stay in the same room as her for the first week!

This is Jendi's site so there were few pictures of this gentle, little darling.

I have tried to put a few pictures of Gonzo together here to celebrate his loving little life. I hope you enjoy them.

If It Should Be

If it should be that I grow weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done
For this last battle cannot be won.

You will be sad I understand,
Don't let grief then stay your hand.
For this day more than all the rest,
Your love for me must stand the test.

We've had so many happy years,
What is to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer so
The time has come to let me go.

Take me where my need they'll tend,
And please stay with me until the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me.
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time that you will see,
The kindness that you did for me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.

Please do not grieve it must be you,
Who has this painful thing to do,
We've been so close, we two, these years
Don't let your heart hold back its tears.

Gonzo's First Family After a few months as an "only child" Gonzo got a sibling, Gizmo, who had not been well treated by his owner (but, was not abused). When my mum's mother died in 1986, Scampi joined the family for a few years. He eventually went to live with a young relative who adored him.
Gizmo was the leader of the family pack. Gonzo accepted his domination, even though he (Gonzo) always won any confrontations (always initiated by Gizmo). Gonzo would simply knock Giz over and stand over him. He never tried to hurt him - or, in the words of the politically correct, use unnecessary force! Gonzo With Gizmo
Gonzo Gonzo loved just sitting on the lounge next to "his mum".
Gonzo - Comfortable as can be...... .....!
Gonzo Well, if mum decides to lie down on the lounge, Gonzo thought the mohair rug folded on the coffee table is not a bad substitute, eh!
When the "new pup" got a new bed, guess who thought it fitted him just fine! Gonzo and Jendi
Jendi grooming Gonzo I thought Gonzo had a bit of bad breath so I did my bit to help! - the Vet said it was just "submissive behaviour" - but, what would she know?
Every morning Gonzo and I just HAD TO HAVE half a dozen "Goodos" - it was our favourite breakfast. Usually we got it in the loungeroom but sometimes, on lovely sunny days, we ate "al fresco"! Gonzo and Jendi
Gonzo and Jendi Aren't we just the most handsome couple? You seldom found me without my Gonzo.
From beginning to end - we were inseparable Gonzo and Jendi
Gonzo and Jendi It was just lovely to see the love we had for each other - so mum said!
The tiny little kitten sitting atop Gonzo was "Squeaky". We only had him for three days - he was just too tiny to survive, but we both loved him. I even carried him around like his mother. He was Mittens' real brother.

A number of very kind people have provided special permanent memorial pages for pets. Their kindness was instrumental in helping me cope with the loss of my Gonzo who was so loving and so loved. If you visit their sites you will understand how they provide solace to others in a most generous and selfless way.
